I’d rather have one of these than a fourth smart. Holy cow. I’m serious!! LOOK AT IT!
Can someone give me a loan of $20k? :D

Much want!!! So classy! :D
These had FIAT 500 drivetrains underneath, so you can swap later FIAT 126p engines (652cc vs 599cc) and transmissions (4-speed manual, NO synchromesh vs. 4-speed manual with synchros on all but 1st/Rev.) in to give them a little more pep and make them easier to drive. It’s pretty much just a drop-in swap as well. :)

Well, which Smart do you like the least?

126 PS would move that little car out smartly. I bet there are some mods as well.

Honestly? Tucker (the 2012). He may be my first, but Phil (2016) and Chelsea (2005) are much more awesome cars.

I don’t think anyone is lining up to buy a well used and hilariously unreliable smart for $20k. xD

Shhhh. They don’t need to know;)

True...but 126p engine would be a lot cheaper if you weren’t able to do the work yourself! :)

yes but motorcycle engine! 16K rpm! BBWWAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, plenty available for the 500 and 126p engines....they don’t become “somebody-swapped-a-motorbike-engine-into-it” fast, but for a tiny 2-cylinder city car with a drivetrain based in late 1950's tech, they can go pretty well! :)
This one is 700cc, bored out, with a lot of mods :D

It would be quite the epic project...especially if you left it looking stock :P

So 126P is an engine model? I was thinking 126 PS, a measure of power output. How many HP would you guess that bright green wonder right there puts out?

Naw, the FIAT 126p is a car. But the 126p is the Polish-built variant of the FIAT 126. The 126/126p used an engine that was based on the classic FIAT 500 - other than the body and interior, they were VERY similar in terms of electrics, engine, gearbox. The 126 got a slightly bored out version and later 126ps had electronic ignition (they built them until 2000 in Poland). The 126 also had a synchro version of the 500's non-synchro box.
The 599cc engine that was in that Autobianchi would’ve had something like 18hp. the 652cc engine in the FIAT 126/126p that could be swapped in had something like 24hp! I know, INSANE performance! :P

And what do you think the modified version in the YouTube video with the Webers might make?
![]() 01/04/2018 at 13:22 |

I’ve heard of heavily modified 500/126 engines making 50hp, but that’s when going all out. :P
The cars only weigh something like 1100-1300lbs or so, so that’s not TOO bad, haha.

Interesting. Nice exhaust note on that YouTube unit.

For sure! They have a unique sound...very thrummy. :)

The fancy Cinquecento. They’re so great. I’d want a Panoramica, the shooting brake version.
I saw this one in Holland last summer.
